city of cambridge ukThe city of Cambridge is home to the nearly 800-year-old great university that bears its name in Cambridgeshire, England. It is one of the nation’s top tourist destinations. And there’s good reason for that. Cambridge is overflowing with seriously beautiful architecture, brain power from Charles Darwin to Stephen Hawking to Sir Isaac Newton, manicured college gardens for relaxing, the ADC Theatre, England’s oldest university playhouse, narrow winding streets, cavernous medieval dining halls, and a new wave of shops, coffee houses and night clubs. For a panoramic view of the entire city, climb the tower of Cambridge University’s Great St. Mary’s Church.

Cambridge is about 60 miles by car from London. This is a city packed with incomparable things to see and do, but it is also small, and can be visited on-foot or on bicycle. The good news is there are no hills in the city’s center. The University and all its schools are a definite destination. Cambridge is made up of 31 Colleges and over 150 departments, faculties, schools and other institutions. While the school’s 22 thousand students are there to learn, the campus is rich in impressive museums, ancient churches and performance.

King’s College chapel stands out among other buildings for its beauty. It took 100 years from 1438 to complete, and is considered the University’s emblem, with its fan-vaulted ceiling, a technological wonder of its age. Queen’s College Master’s lodge offers an open-air Shakespearean play in June and has the mathematical bridge, the first in the world designed according to mathematical analysis of the forces in it. Over Trinity College’s main gate there is a statue of King Henry VIII holding a large circle and a chair leg. Trinity chapel is worth visiting for its statues and plaques of famous alumni like Sir Isaac Newton and Lord Byron.

The Fitzwilliam Museum houses an incredible collection of antiques and pictures. The Sedgewick Museum of Earth Sciences on Downing Street has the world’s largest spider, and rocks, minerals and gemstones. The Round Church, Cambridge’s second oldest building, is one of only four round churches in Britain. The “Grasshopper Clock” which sits on the corner of the Corpus’ Christi Taylor Library was unveiled in 2008. It has a shining 24-carat gold dial and a grasshopper for its timekeeper. Looking at a cityscape, the major buildings to capture the attention are the Cambridge University Library, Addenbrook’s Hospital, especially the tall chimney, King’s College Chapel, Cavendish Laboratory, and the tower of St. John’s College Chapel. With an approximate population of over 100,000, the town sees many visitors every year. These visitors come not only because of the university, but there are many other events and reasons to visit the city. Some of the attractions include public events held yearly. Cambridge is home to the University of Cambridge, and is the home of several major festivals and sports clubs and events.

The University

The public research university at Cambridge is the second oldest university in the United Kingdom. It is one of the top academic universities in the entire world. Began in the early 1200s, today it offers six different schools of learning and 31 colleges.

Festivals

- Cambridge Folk Festival is three and a half days of music held every summer at Cherry Hinton Hall in the incorporated village of Cherry Hinton. The festival includes performances, in an arena area, Floor Singers stages, and impromptu performances by people in the audience.
- Cambridge Shakespeare Festival celebrates the works of Shakespeare with six weeks in July and August. Live music in Elizabethan style and authentic full-costumed performances happen outdoors on the grounds and gardens of the university.
- Cambridge Film Festival is a big annual event attended by people from all over the UK and the world. The festival features international films first shown at larger world film festivals.

Sports

- Football became an official game with rules at the university in 1848. Cambridge University members drew up the rules that have been official ever since. The first game with the new rules was played in Parker’s Piece. The University was the major influence in forming rules for the Football Association in 1863. The city has two football clubs.
- Rugby football has a loyal following in the city. Cambridge is represented in both of the rugby codes.
- Cambridge University has a boat club. Rowing in bump races are major events for the university.

These and other sports such as tennis, cycling, baseball, motorcycle racing, and more, keep athletes busy in Cambridge and especially athletes from the university. The university also participates in varsity sports with Oxford University. International audiences watch these events.

Settlements in Cambridge, England date back to the first century, BC. Romans, Saxons, and Vikings have all ruled the city and left their mark. Today, one can see evidence of Roman walls and modern technology. Cambridge, sometimes called Silicon Fen in homage to the Silicon Valley, is a cradle of technology businesses and science parks.

Educational Tour

Cambridge is home to two major universities, the University of Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin University. Cambridge University is home to the iconic King’s College Chapel. Construction began in the mid 1400s under the reign of King Henry VI, and continued through the War of the Roses, the reigns of Edward IV, Richard III, Henry VII and Henry VIII. The Chapel’s stunning fan vaulted ceiling and medieval stained glass make this Chapel a must-see on any visit to Cambridge.

The Anglia Ruskin University hosts free lunchtime concerts sponsored by it arts program. The Ruskin Gallery features a variety of exhibitions, including a showing of the works produced by the college’s second year art students. Other exhibitions include Printmaking, Fine Art, Photography, and Children’s Book Illustrations.

Activities Tour

The Cambridge Corn Exchange serves the dual purpose of an examination hall for Cambridge University students and as the premiere concert venue in Cambridge. The Cambridge Corn Exchange opened its doors in 1875, hosting its first Motor Show in 1898, the London Symphony Orchestra, and a Tea for a Thousand. It also remained a local trading spot until the 1960 when the Cattle Market opened its doors. Other activities include boxing matches, wrestling tournaments, and roller-skating.

The Cambridge Leisure Park is anything but “leisurely”. The Park houses a nine-screen movie theatre, tenpin bowling lanes, a gym, and several restaurants and bars. Providing plenty of entertainment, the Cambridge Leisure Park has something to do for everyone.

Relaxing Tour

The Cambridge University Botanic Garden contains more than 8,000 species of plants spread out over its 40-acre campus. Its many gardens include a traditional Rose Garden, seasonal Autumn and Winter Gardens, Cambridge Hedgerow, and British Wild Plants. The Grass Maze provides children the opportunity to race through the high grasses to see who can solve the mystery of the maze first. The Lake offers new vistas with each changing season. Water plants thrive in the warm months, while the deciduous trees display vibrant color in the cooler fall months. The Lake also attracts mallards, moorhens, and herons, and it shelters rudd and other native fish.

The earliest indications of settlement in the Cambridge area consisted of a farmstead that dates back 3,500 years. However, major development did not occur in the area until 40 A.D. when the Romans invaded. Over time, the village grew and eventually became known as Cambridge. Cambridge’s famous university was founded in 1209 A.D. by students that were fleeing some of Oxford’s hostile inhabitants. Among Cambridge’s many attractions are several varieties of sports, theater, music and tourist sites.

Cambridge holds many football, rugby and watersport events. The city played a key roll in the development of modern football. In 1848 the game’s first set of rules was drafted by members of the University of Cambridge. Cambridge participates in both National Division One and National Conference League codes of rugby. Rowing is a fairly popular sport in Cambridge as the River Cam flows through the city’s centre. Most of the University’s individual colleges have boathouses on the river. Other sporting events include cricket and tennis matches as well as motorcycle racing.

The two largest theatres in Cambridge are the Arts Theatre, located in the city’s centre, and the Cambridge Corn Exchange. The Arts Theatre hosts shows performed by traveling troupes as well as local companies. The Cambridge Corn Exchange was renovated in the 1980s, which transformed it into a full time venue that can seat 1200 people. It now exhibits theatre, dance and musical performances. In addition, there are a number of theatre venues contained in the University of Cambridge. Each year, the University presents the Cambridge Shakespeare Festival, an eight week long series of performances.

Cambridge is also home to many musical festivals. The largest folk music festival in the United Kingdom, the Cambridge Folk Festival, has taken place here since 1964. A yearly classical music event, the Cambridge Summer Music Festival, is held by the University. Several musical groups have gotten their start in Cambridge, the most notable of which is Pink Floyd.

Major visitor attractions in Cambridge include The Fitzwilliam Museum, King’s College and The Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences. The Fitzwilliam Museum is an expansive collection of art and artifacts from numerous time periods and civilisations. King’s College is a must see example of late Gothic English architecture. The Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences exhibits a vast assemblage of fossils, rocks and minerals from around the world.

Approximately 80 kilometres northeast of London, the city has many visitors every year from friends and family members of students to businesspersons working for technological and electronics corporations, to tourists interested in British Isles’ and ancient history. Certainly, Cambridge is a rich cultural city today and is a fascinating historical region of the United Kingdom.

History

Since before the era of the ancient Roman Empire, people have lived in the area of Cambridge, England. Where the Fitzwilliam College is today, there are the remains of a farm that is at least 3,500 years old. On Castle Hill, evidence shows that a Belgic tribe lived there in the 1st century B.C. The Romans used Castle Hill to as a military outpost to defend the River Cam. They called the hill settlement Duroliponte.

After the Roman era, the Saxons took over the hill. Remains of Saxon gravesites are still evident. Then, in the first and early in the second century A.D., Vikings came to Cambridge. The Saxons took over again when the Vikings left in the mid 1000s. William of Normandy was the king to put a castle on Castle Hill.

It was in the early 1200s that the university began. One of the most famous buildings in Cambridge is the King’s College Chapel connected to the King’s College, a part of Cambridge University. The chapel is a fine specimen of Gothic, Perpendicular architecture.

Culture

The Fitzwilliam Museum has around 300,000 visitors annually. It is a museum of art and ancient history. Admission is free. Exhibits are divided into five sections: books and manuscripts, medals and coins, prints and drawings, historical artifacts, and applied arts.

The Arts Theatre is a traditional theatre that has over 600 seats. It hosts local theatre groups as well as touring productions. The Cambridge Corn Exchange is the largest theatre venue with room for a seated audience of 1200. There are several other smaller theatres around the area.

The most famous music band from Cambridge is Pink Floyd, but the town holds one of the largest folk music festivals in the entire UK, the Cambridge Folk Festival. Other yearly festivals are celebrated in Cambridge like the Cambridge Summer Music Festival for classical music and the Cambridge Shakespeare Festival.

Sports are important in this university town. Especially important are football, rugby and water sports.

Fitzwilliam Museum

Built between 1837 and 1848, Fitzwilliam Museum is famous for its collections of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman antiquities. It also houses excellent examples of English pottery, Medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, and works by Rembrandt, Rubens, Matisse, and many more. This neoclassical style building is situated on Trumpington Street in the city centre.

King’s College Chapel

One of the most iconic buildings in the UK is the King’s College Chapel. People around the world watch “A Festival of Nine Seasons” which is broadcast annually from the chapel on Christmas Eve. Construction began by Henry VI in 1448 and took over a century to complete. A superb example of late Gothic architecture, the King’s College Chapel holds the world’s largest fan vault ceiling and spectacular stained glass windows created between 1515 and 1531.

Cambridge University Botanic Garden

The Cambridge University Botanic Garden features over 8000 species of plants from around the UK and the world. Founded in 1846, this heritage listed botanical garden is home to a variety of individual gardens, including the Scented Garden, Rock Garden, and the Glasshouse Range which features tropical plants and cacti.

University Museum of Zoology

See “Beetles, Finches, and Barnacles, the zoological collections of Charles Darwin” at the University Museum of Zoology.

Cambridge American Cemetery

The Cambridge American Cemetery holds the remains of 3812 American men and women who lost their lives serving during World War II. The Wall of the Missing memorializes 5127 missing servicemen.

Punting on the River Cam

When most people think of Cambridge, they imagine punt boats lazily gliding down the River Cam. Visitors will enjoy viewing this idyllic scene, or better yet, try it themselves!

Queen’s College

Founded in 1448 by Margaret of Anjou, Queen of Henry VI, this college is best known for its oft photographed Mathematical Bridge. Cambridge On A Budget

cambridge on a budgetOnly 45 minutes by train from central London, Cambridge offers the escape from the city that most crave, without spending most of the day travelling. However, I would recommend staying for a couple of day and really taking in the sights.
Although Cambridge has its city status, in reality it is a small market town populated mostly by students. The renowned university is made up of around 31 colleges and is scatted all over this historic city, so it’s hard to miss for any visitors looking to explore the ancient buildings.

I would particularly recommend visiting St John’s, Trinity and King’s College and Chapel as they are a classic example of fine architecture. Beautiful all year round, there really is no excuse not to visit this historic place, although for those of you who prefer to avoid the crowds of tourists should give summer days a miss in exchange for spring, just as everything seems to be coming back to life from a typically British winter.

Cambridge City Council has launched Big Day Out which offers free entertainment for visitors and locals, as well as maximising the potential of green space which is throughout the city. I would particularly recommend Strawberry Fair, a music festival held in early June which offers a feel of the real Cambridge with the usual stalls and entertainment for the whole family.

Getting around

Cycling
Cycling in Cambridge is a must; notoriously bad for driving, cycling takes away all the stress of wondering where to go and where to park and gives you complete freedom. Hire companies are dotted all over the City, averaging at about £10 per bike per day. The unusually flat terrain means that cycling is not just an option for the super fit, and is a credible option for all the family.

Hire a punt
Depending on the time of the year this is good way to see the city from a different perspective. At £16 per hour between a maximum of 6 people it works out relatively cheap although you should note, it’s not quite as easy as it looks from dry land! If offers the personal touch as you don’t have to share with strangers, so guarantees lots of laughs as you try to master steering the boat in a straight line.

Where to go
The Fitzwilliam Museum is free and open 7 days a week which is always a bonus on rainy Sundays. Leave at least an afternoon free as it is packed with artwork and antiques from all around the world and over the eras, from Whistler to Picasso and from Greece to Egypt. They often have guest exhibitions so it is well worth checking the website for up and coming events. The building itself is an impressive example of 19th century architecture.
Cambridge University Botanic Garden is a great place to visit on a good weather day and as a bonus it’s free. With a beautiful range of national collections it is a gardener or ammeter photographer’s dream. Definitely worth a visit.
The University Museum of Zoology is free Monday to Saturday and houses collections from 1814, and many artefacts from Darwin’s personal collection.

Where to stay
The Cambridge Youth Hostel lies a few minutes away from the train station and around 15 minutes walk to the city centre. The location is ideal for those on a budget who still want to be near the city centre. With friendly and helpful staff this is definitely the best option for those on a tight budget.
Outside of term time you can stay in the university colleges, prices range from £35 to £85 but offer an insight into the real university experience. Slightly pricey for those on a small budget but the experience of staying in colleges once occupied by the prestigious Newton, Cromwell, Darwin, Wordsworth, Hawking and Fry is truly priceless.

I am moving into a new house that is rented in Cambridge uk.It is a house share with one more person.
Is it compulsory by law to get home insurance before I move into this house?

No, it is not compulsory.
It is entirely up to you, since they are your belongings in the house, and if they are stolen or damaged then it’s your loss.

I want to know what are the IB requirements (which subjects I am supposed to take and how many points are needed) to get into the University of Cambridge for medicine?

I looked on ucas and the cam website but I didn’t find anything too detailed, but on medschools online it says

“Offers are regularly made on the International Baccalaureate, at a level of between 7,6,6 and 7,7,7 in the Higher Level subjects, with overall scores between 38 and 42 points out of 45.”

But it doesn’t specify any subjects. I would recommend you ring or email admissions to be safe.
